The play Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, is about two feuding families where a boy and girl from opposite sides fall in love. After Romeo hears the news about Juliet’s death, he goes to buy poison from a man who is so poor that Romeo knows he will sell it to him. He then went to the tomb, handed the letter to Balthasar to give to Romeo’s father, and drank the potion. The letter is significant to the play, because it has the real reason that Romeo decided to kill himself, and it most likely talks about the feud, and how Romeo views it. Romeo’s letter most likely included his deep love for Juliet, to the point where he would do anything for her, and the feud and how it affected his situation. Romeo must have realized that killing Tybalt would upset Juliet, or he wouldn’t have continuously said that they were friends. Romeo could believe that it was the fault of the feud that killed Tybalt. He knows that Juliet would be forced to choose a side after realizing, “Romeo’s hand shed Tybalt’s blood?” (3.2.77). Romeo most likely blames his parents for the feud, since they are always instigating it. In the first scene when Benvolio and Tybalt are fighting, Capulet asks his wife to give him his sword, because “Old Montague is come And flourishes his blade in spite of me” (1.1.81). Romeo would have thought that Juliet died of a broken heart because she was so upset that her husband was banished and her cousin killed. If this was true, then Romeo would blame himself and the feud for the fact that Juliet is dead. This could lead him to kill himself since he felt that he killed her.
