In Van Gogh’s version, there are many lines that form the different structures within the painting. There are many actual lines within it that create the outlines of the different bedroom furniture. They are filled with colors that seem to be brushstrokes. This picture seems like the brushstrokes could be the actual textures. However, since I cannot physically feel the brushstrokes on this painting, I will say that it seems to be implied brushstrokes.
I sat on the grainy wood floor of the art studio, dog-earing pages of Van Gogh’s early charcoal sketches of poor, working men. With few lines and simple shape, he was able to convey an entire existence. With sweeping and curved strokes, he created cypress trees in motion, swaying back and forth. In my own work, I wanted to replicate the masters. The image on the left is The Old Church at Nuenen which was one of van Gogh’s earlier paintings. It had more somber and dark colors where it used more of a literal representation with the colors and the lighting instead of how The Church at Auvers. Van Gogh eventually became an impressionist so the painting on the right is influenced more by that time period in art with the wavy distorted lines to make the church appear to look like it’s melting and the many bright colors use a scheme to have viewers and critics to move their eyes around the painting with more excitement and without have to follow along a boring horizon. I also like the ideas of the landscapes because they truly are works of art. The stillness and serenity thtat are always consistent in landscapes. According to a review by the national Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence in Britain, consistent evidence has been found that art therapies are effective in reducing the negative symptoms of schizophrenia. In this particular study by Hanevik, Hestad & Teglbjaerg, the aim was to help patients understand their psychotic experiences; the exploration of art therapy (as exploration of the psychotic experience) would allow them to cope with their disorder in a better way. The study was carried out under naturalistic clinical conditions and the therapy was offered on a regular basis in a group therapy setting in a psychiatric hospital. Two of the participants described how they, through the use of art therapy, “were able to control their psychosis.”
