Victor Frankenstein, once a social and friendly man, becomes responsible for his own solitary confinement. Obsessed with the thought of creating life himself, Victor spends two years of his life dedicating his time to the birth of his creation. “My cheek had grown pale with study, and my person had become emaciated with confinement. (32)” When he mentions that he has grown pale, this allows the reader to see that he is failing to take care of himself both physically and mentally. Victor deprives himself of “rest and health” (56) as he has “worked hard for nearly two years” (56) while he isolated himself in his chamber creating the creature. His family and friends strived to reach out to him, sending him letters, though he barely responded to them. “I, who had ever been surrounded by amiable companions, continually engaged in endeavouring to bestow mutual pleasure, I was now alone. (43)” Victor feels remorseful about becoming so isolated from his loved ones. He becomes so depressed with what he’s done that he starts to forget about things that he once enjoyed, such as nature walks, and the company of friends. “And the same feelings which made me neglect the scenes around me caused me also to forget those friends who were so many miles absent, and whom I had not seen for so long a time.
