Newspeak was the official language of Oceania. The government in 1984 created Newspeak to eliminate words that the government thought was unnecessary, such as the word “bad.” The government used Newspeak to their advantage by easily corrupting the thoughts of the people in Oceania, even though they already completely control them. By reducing words and eliminating Oldspeak they can eventually dumb their society down, making it impossible for the people to think on their own. The government is weakening the independence of the people’s individual minds and forcing them to live in constant fear, so they are forced to accept anything the Party tells them to. The government also employs the people to help create Newspeak, so that the people employed at the Ministry of Truth believe they are helping the people not corrupting them. In the novel 1984, Syme worked in the Research Department in at the Ministry of Truth and he was one of the experts working on the Eleventh Edition of the Newspeak dictionary. The Party uses slogans such as, “War is Peace” “Freedom is Slavery” and “Ignorance is Strength” to manipulate the opinions of the masses and to continue their power to control the people. The slogan “War is Peace” ensures that the people believe that constant war is being waged as a way of maintaining peace, without war, the Party’s control would be threatened. “Freedom is Slavery” slogan makes the people think they are free individuals, but in reality their minds and actions are being controlled by the government like slaves.
