Billy Budd has a lot to attribute to his death from the constant criticism of Claggert to the duties of Captain Vere or even Billy's impediment that he punches and kills Claggert because he can’t say what he needs to. Ultimately it comes down to Claggert for the main reason that he was the instigator in the whole mess. Billy’s popularity and personality, the time leading up to the death and the interview with Vere and Claggert were the most important parts of the story relating to Billie’s death.
