Have you ever seen two people so in love, they quite literally kill people for each other? In a tragic story, two star crossed lovers have a failed attempt at marriage, even after going behind their feuding families. Juliet, Romeo, and Friar Lawrence are all a part of causing the tragedy in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare. Some people may say that Old Man Capulet, Juliet’s dad, was another big reason for this tragedy, and I agree. I disagree with the idea that he was one of the three main people to contribute. He did give the servant who was illiterate a list of names to send party invites to, but it was also a problem for the servant who should’ve spoken up more, and maybe given the job to someone else. Juliet knew that she would be getting married to Paris, after she met Romeo. Before she met Romeo she also knew she needed to get married as soon as possible. When she met Romeo and found out he was a Montague she could’ve stopped and explained to him that they should not date, and she already was looking for another love interest. The nurse also told Juliet face to face that Romeo was a Montague, “His name is Romeo , and a Montague, The only son of your great enemy.” If this wasn’t enough proof for Juliet that she should stop, then what else would be? Friar Lawrence was the only person throughout the entire play to know what was going on with everything. He secretly married two young children who should not have been married without taking specific Catholic precautions. He went behind both the Montague and Capulet families causing much chaos. He did not take some steps to be able to fully marry Romeo and Juliet, which would be considered wrong and not right, especially for a priest to do. He then agreed to fake Juliet’s death to avoid marrying her and Paris, which he wouldn’t be able to do since he just married Romeo and Juliet. He put the Capulet family into so much trouble by saying that Juliet had died, that could’ve all been avoided by simply telling the truth. “O brother Montague, give me thy hand” Capulet says to Montague in despair. After Friar Lawrence finally reveals the major lies he has been keeping, Capulet and Montague come together as one and fully understand what this man has done to both of their children, and now families.
