The Barker-Karpis Gang was a very famous criminal group during the Great Depression. The gang was led by Alvin Karpis (1907-1979) and Fred Barker (1903-1935). Alvin Karpis and Fred Barker met when they were both imprisoned in Kansas. And of course the gang had other former gang members throughout the years, Arthur Barker, Lawrence DeVol, Harvey Bailey, Frank Nash, Bernard Phillips, Harry Sawyer, Volney Davis, Harry Campbell, and Verne Miller. Throughout the years, the gang has had only two major kidnappings, and robbed dozens of banks.
Origins of the gang/ information about the founders The Black P. Stones is an American street gang founded on the south side of Chicago. The gang was originally founded in 1959 by Jeff Fort and Eugene Hairston. Jeff Fort is originally from Mississippi. His parents John and Annie Fort were former sharecroppers who moved their family to the Chicago southside in 1955 by 22nd and Cottage Grove. The family moved to the Woodlawn community a year later due to construction.
Incidentally, large cities were the main location for organized gangs. Although there were over half a dozen powerful gangs in New York, Chicago was the capital of the racketeers, including Johnny Torrio, “Bugs” Moran, the Gennas, and the O’Banions (Addiction History 4). The most powerful and infamous bootlegger, by far, was Al Capone, operating out of Chicago. One of the most gruesome and remembered gangland murders of all time occurred on Valentine’s Day, 1929. Because of business differences, Capone ordered hit man Jack McGurn plot the murder of Bugs Moran and the O’Banion/Weiss gang, which Moran had recently taken control of.
The Shelton gang terrorized the area of Fairfield Il., in Wayne County, during the prohibition era. During the prohibition the Shelton’s got into bootlegging, gambling, prostitution, facts about the organization, and how it all ended in 1945. During the prohibition, they bootlegged their own moonshine and others all over Wayne County. While they were bootlegging and making alcohol, they made a lot of rivals with other bootleggers in the area. Beside just bootlegging they also had casinos for people to gamble at all over southern IL.

This holds true for the Black Disciples (BDs), located on the south side of Chicago. They have gained notoriety over the past decade for the relationship they have with hip-hop. Most listeners only know about this. It goes deeper than that. The Black Disciples have proven to be extremely dangerous and are known to do anything to solidify their image.
The 1920s were filled with gangs and many changes in society. One of the those changes was the addition of the 18th. The 18th amendment was ratified January 16, 1919. It created something called prohibition which outlawed the distribution, production, and use of alcohol. Despite the law, people still continued to drink alcohol in places called speakeasies.

Al Capone was a very powerful leader and an all around mastermind. Capone was raised around gangs in the city when he moved there from Naples and joined one in his teens called Johnny Torrio’s James Street Boys ran by Johnny Torrio. Later, he moved on to the Five Points Gang, which he graduated from. He got into a gang fight and someone cut his face with a razor hence the nickname “Scarface” (Grossman). When Torrio entered a brothel business he sent for Capone to be a bouncer at the saloon.
Americans have always been in search for bigger answers to life and seeking spiritual enlightenment. In the 1970’s new religions started to emerge many people flocked to new ideals and beliefs seeking a higher enlightenment. As a result of people searching for the meaning of life or a higher power, religious cults became prevalent in American society in the 1970’s. Most cults have some foundation rooted in a Christian belief for example the Branch Davidians, church leader David Koresh was a former Seventh Day Adventist whose racial views had him removed from the church.
Ask the average American to name a gang they are familiar with and chances are the response will be either the Crips or the Bloods. Over four decades ago, African American youth founded these gangs after many years of oppression, marginalization, and institutional racism. The Crips and the Bloods, who originated from neighborhoods of Southern California, have now spread across the nation with a presence in thirty-two states. They changed the American landscape forever.
In 1865 there were many rumors that had spread among the slaves about the Emancipation Proclamation.(which had been signed two years before) The Emancipation Proclamation declared that all slaves in the 11 Rebel states were free. In 1865 the Thirteenth amendment was passed which freed all slaves in the US. The Thirteenth amendment took about a year to be ratified and fully enforced.
The Roaring Twenties I. The Roaring Twenties altered the everyday lives of many Americans. Many more people listened to music, women became more liberated, and there was a rise in the number of people smoking and drinking. The list goes on and on. Many major events took place in the twenties like women getting the right to vote, the ratification of the 19th Amendment (Prohibition), and the publication of “The Great Gatsby”. As a whole the Roaring Twenties were pictured as a time of independence and freedom.
The Crips are a gang that is predominantly African American and the group is known to be one of the largest and most violent gangs in the United States. What enticed him to the Crips was the respect and glory that bangers received and the unity of the Crip set.
