This shows that by having extra hope and the will to live, she saved the lives of four people, including herself. If the family did what everyone else did, sitting around hoping for a miracle, than they would have ended up dead like
Thats how I got the paw.” (Jacobs 34-35) This shows that if the family decides to use the paw then then there may be dreadful consequences. THis keeps the readers wanting more. They want to know if the family uses the
How can a magical paw change a family’s life? In the monkey’s paw by W.W. Jacobs, a family is torn apart when a cursed paw that is given to Mr. White. The magical paw changes everything. The Whites son Herbert is deceased. Who is responsible for Herbert’s death?
He told the them, “Hold it up in your right hand and wish aloud,” (9). Morris had already let them know the paw works ( 9), but now he told them how to use it. If he had not told them how to use it, they could never have wished for anything therefore none of the sorrows that came with wishing on the paw would happen. Furthermore the Whites may already be interested in the paw, but without the knowledge of how to use it the paw would simply be a souvenir from a foreign land. So, in brief because Sergeant-Major Morris told the Whites how to use the paw they now have the potential to wish, which does not end well for
The experience with paw adds doubt to anything else to knock at their doorstep. Point 3: But the Whites explained their displeasure for the paw after experiencing the consequences. Explain: Placing blame on this foreign object, rather than taking responsibility for the selfishness the paw granted.
Mr. White himself had said, “It seems to me I’ve got all I want.” (Page 36). This shows that there was no reason for him to use the paw. If Mr. White would have been content with the life that he had, his family wouldn’t have suffered, but he followed his son’s instructions since he loved him. When Mrs. White told him
“The Monkey’s Paw” ended off pretty depressing and sad because Mr.White
#1 about “The Monkey's Paw” The cause is that Morris said If you keep it, don't blame me for what happens. Sargent-Major Morris was the when Mr. White the paw, that night he gave it to him because he wanted it for it's power, Morris told Mr. White that the last wish will be evil. The fear in the charters words what they say it is like they
““Hold it up in your right hand, and wish aloud,” said Sergeant Major, “ but I warn you of the consequences,”(Jacobs 41). This explains that the paw is a metaphor that basically means that if you want something you must know consequences that the thing can cause you. Another example is from the story “Tell Tale Heart” this story uses symbolism to let the reader know that you should always before you do something because someone may
In The Monkeys Paw, Mrs. White used the magical object (monkey’s paw). One out of the three wishes granted using the monkeys paw was to have her son back. The outcome of this was pounding at the door, not knowing exactly who was behind the door. The Monkeys Paw is all about granting wishes and not expecting its outcome. This is comparable to The Story of an Hour because Mrs. Mallard wished to have her husband back in her life, but she didn’t expect the outcome of actually seeing her husband alive.
Cite textual evidence from the selection to support your answer. Mr. White’s feelings transition from sheepish to fearful to panicky when he makes his first, second, and third wish, respectively. Right before Mr. White makes his first wish, he “smil[ed] shamefacedly at his own credulity” (Jacobs). At first, Mr. White was skeptical with the monkey’s paw. He felt gullible when he made his first wish.
That creates suspense because the reader wants to know why he wished for death. It foreshadows that the paw brings bad luck. Sergeant Major Morris also tells the Whites “…don’t blame me for what happens” (Jacobs 91). It foreshadows that something very bad is going to happen. Herbert foreshadows his death by saying the quote “Well I don’t see the money…and I bet I never shall”(134-135 Jacobs).
The conflict in the story is not only the monkey’s paw but was somewhat Mr. White’s attitude. If he never was that greedy the story would have changed he would have agreed with Morris and burned the monkey’s paw but he didn’t want to do that creating the plot. Any change in the plot could have/ would have altered the course of the story but also altering the theme. In “The Monkey’s Paw,” the downfall of the White family is when they receive the two hundred pounds as a compensation for the son’s death which was actually caused by messing with fate.
I was born when the lost stars in the dusty sky danced the night away. In a situation “poorer than any illness, worse than death” I weigh 2.2 kilograms. From the soft hurricane of the people’s words they shook their heads and said to my mom’s face I would not survive a mouth. I was a “fried frog” in this burning hot world. Although the world gave up on me my Mo (mom) and Pai (dad) never did.
Have you ever watched a suspenseful movie about magic? Have you ever wished you had your own genie that would grant you three wishes? However, the three wishes aren 't exactly what you wished for? Well in the story the Monkey’s Paw that pattern seems to be happening a lot.
