Introduction
The Sumerians were the most successful Ancient Civilization. They lived in the region of Mesopotamia. Mesopotamia means “the land between two rivers”. It had the nickname “Cradle of Civilization”. Sumerians developed the first type of writing called Cuneiform . Sumerians had different cultures, such as their script, gods and attitude towards women. They had many social customs and laws. It was a combination of monarchy and democracy. The kingdoms of Sumer were organized into city-states and the Kings ruled each city-states for the gods. They were assisted by priests, scribes, and nobles. But before 3500 BC priests ruled Sumer. It was invented to organize labor and officials were appointed to sort out problems and work on construction projects. Now the people of Sumer had a chance to get a new job, working for the Sumerian government.
The Beginning of the Sumerians The Sumerians were the first people to migrate to Mesopotamia, they created a great civilization. Beginning around 5,500 years ago, the Sumerians built cities along the rivers in Lower Mesopotamia, specialized, cooperated, and made many advances in technology. The wheel, plow, and writing (a system which we call cuneiform) are examples of their achievements. The farmers in Sumer created levees to hold back the floods from their fields and cut canals to channel river water to the fields. The use of levees and canals is called irrigation, another Sumerian invention.
