Who’s to Blame for WWI World War I began July 28th, 1914 between Austria and Serbia. Shortly after Russia, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom joined the war. Arguably, there are multiple reasons for the commencing of the war and to each country there is a different reason. The reason Austria entered was because the heir to the throne, Franz Ferdinand, was murdered by an extreme Serbian nationalist. The reason that Serbia answered the call for war was due to their desire to unite all the Serb people. This war began in Austria and Serbia but managed to span a large portion of Europe. Germany had many influences to join the war, but one of the biggest was the blank check that they issued to Austria-Hungary (Harkness Discussion, np). Germany was prepared for a war, and began to mobilize after France and Russia made their agreements. Germany declared war on France August 3rd, 1914 then invaded Belgium ten days after neutrality had been declared. This was Germany’s way of invading France and making sure that the Schlieffen Plan took place, which was the invasion of France and Belgium resulting in a successful two front war. Russia had the highest death toll with over 3,300,000 people killed. The total of deaths was around 18 million with even more soldiers wounded. A large cause of deaths in fighting was during the trench warfare because men would get sick in the trenches. There was a large problem with hygiene when men were in the trenches, there would be dead bodies lying around, excretion found in mass piles, and men would contract “trench foot” which if left untreated would cause them to have their leg amputated (Monjar, np). Warfare during World War I, was some of the most advanced fighting, u-boats, airplanes, and tanks. U-boats were introduced during this time in Germany in order to destroy ships that were shipped in supplies and ammunition. The airplanes were used by attaching machine guns on to them to become fighter plans. Tanks were used mainly by the British in the beginning of World War I and were mainly used to gain faster
