American Sign Language(ASL) is Always on my Hands: ASL Should be Provided to Students Schools throughout the United States teach second languages like Spanish or French to students but not ASL.This is a problem. Over 5% of the world population(466 million people) have a hearing disability, and throughout time, it is estimated to grow an alarming amount. By not teaching students how to exchange information with this large population, they are denied the ability to properly communicate one of the many purposes schools have to provide to students. This ends up creating more problems such as discrimination and isolation between the hearing and the Deaf. According to Educational Playcare, School Health, and Signing Time, ASL being taught to children from young ages can enhance their growth tremendously as well as provide them with an amazing skill. One of the many benefits ASL provides to the young is that it can help behavioral related problems by making the child feel more welcome to share their feelings in a mature manner. Yes, sign language is in no way easy to learn and may even be fairly complicated at the beginning, but it will improve and once it clicks. In the first few semesters of learning ASL, a little over six hundred vocabulary words will be taught, much like other languages, in a short amount of time. According to Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, the part of the brain ASL is worked in is the same place in the brain we work on cohesiveness and rhythm. In other words, where everything connects.
