Aeneas should have left Dido, because if he didn’t the gods would have done something to make Aeneas regret not leaving. The gods had already showed that they will do anything to make sure things go as they plan, like when Minerva sent down two poisonous snakes to kill Laocoon, who opposed the idea of taking the Greek’s wooden horse into Troy. By killing him the Trojans believe that the gods would punish them if they didn’t take the horse into Troy. If Aeneas didn’t leave it is likely the gods would have helped King Iarbas to take over Carthage, since King Iarbas was upset about Dido wanting to marry Aeneas, and previously refused King Iarbas proposal.
