Why Books Shouldn’t Be Banned In Classroom
Books, the pathway to knowledge, can also be known as the pathway to the real world. A world of harsh realities and truths some of which are represented in a classroom environment through books. Some books, especially young adult literature, expose the students to crude, explicit, or inappropriate material which the child or their parents might not understand. On the contrary, some students need that connection to a character in a YAL novel to really understand what is going on in their own personal life. The real world is full of harsh realities and explicit content that some students never get the chance to see until they are actually coughing up to it themselves. This can often cause students to be caught having to have extreme pain or anger because of the alien situation that they were thrown into. Many goals can also be achieved in a classroom setting because, “YAL is for students to recognize injustice, question the status quo, develop their own opinions about others, and learn how to overcome the angst and pains of adolescence” (Source G). The awareness and the fact that the issue is brought up in advance in the classroom, actually helps students when they face the situation later and it helps them understand it better. The classroom environment mainly feels safe for the students because they are around their classmates and more importantly their teachers. The teachers are always trying to help the students not only in their school life but in their personal lives as well. There are many teachers who “seemed to feel it was their duty in life to shock their students – to destroy the little bit of children’s protective naiveté” (Source F). Teachers need to be able to break their students out of this projective space that they are always kept in and expose them in a safe environment to the harsh realities. When students are shown all the realities in a safe environment through the use of books, they almost get the experience of the harsh real world in a safe place where students can get their own opinions, thoughts and beliefs. Overall, students need to be given the awareness of all these issues in a safe environment through a safe form of learning such as books. While they may portray harsh realities, they create a safe version that students can learn and benefit
