In today’s sport world one the biggest arguments is college athletes getting paid. A lot of sport writers believe the rules for paying college athletes should change because they are hardworking young adults. Some athletes need to pay for books and school while their parents are hurting with money because they are paying the big schools a lot of money for their kid to perform at a high level. For example the NCAA March Madness tournament makes billions of dollars from the TV channels that play their games, the merchandise that’s sold, and all the tickets. The first statement said college athletes could be paid through endorsements and not their school. The athletes could use their popularity of their name to make money. For example every kid buys stuff the pro athletes have like signature shoes and their jerseys. Colleges that are signed with the big sporting brands could sell college merchandise with the names on it and the athletes could make a portion of their own jersey sales. Another idea of them making money through endorsements is doing commercials with local businesses and using their popularity to get businesses attention from the public. A problem with paying college kids isn’t really talked about. There is the music and art college prodigies who are doing concerts and art shows and they are getting paid and it’s perfectly fine. College athletes are in high level classes and have a sport packed schedule every day and they don’t get anything in return. In the past there’s been college football players that use YouTube and do daily video blogs. They go through their entire day as a college athlete. The videos were very popular and got to the point where they were being paid by YouTube. The NCAA noticed their athletes were being paid and they made the athletes take down the account because they didn’t want them making money. It states that the athletes are “Student-Athletes” and that student comes first. The NCAA wants every athletes to receive a quality education and the problem with that is the athletes have workouts, practice, film sessions, and team meetings all the time and are in class as much as possible, so they aren’t really getting the quality education their parents are paying for. Amateurism doesn’t allow the following, contracts with professional teams, playing with professionals, and any type of tryout practice, or workouts with professionals.
