How and why did African slavery develop in the North American colony of England?
Slavery began in 1619 when the first Africans were brought to the Jamestown. Jamestown was one of the North American colonies of England. As we know, the most famous migration in the world history was Africans movement to the New World. By the time when the slavery ended in the New world, more than 12 million Africans had arrived to America (Goldfield, 2013). The development of African slavery in the North American colony of England was caused by the Europeans from the invention of the plantations, low cost of the labor force, and the boost of enslavement.

However, at that time, European had owned both black and white slaves, and back then the slaves was minority of European laborers. For most of the 17th century, slaves were more expensive than servants. Because of the servants worked for their owners only for a short time period rather than for a whole life period, so they cost cheaper and they were easier to control. For instance, if you were a master, you could fire a lazy servant that you did not like, but it was hard for you to fire a slave that you were owned. However, started at the 1680s, planters in many places began to shift from servants to slaves. Two reasons behind this shift: first, white servants were hard to find; second, African slaves became more available due to the changes in the slave trade. Because of the improving economy in England, more and more people could find job at home, so fewer white men and women would choose to become servants. As white servants lessening, the needs for slaves had been increasing. The changes in slave trade had make the buyers could directly get the slaves, which also increased the supply of the
