Chris Mccandless was not your typical person living in a society that people obey the government rules. He had his own beliefs on what he wanted to do in his life. Out of all the places he could have gone, why did he choose the wild? When Chris entered the wilderness he was searching for independence and freedom. Chris wanted to get away from society and live his life with no rules, “He’d tell us to think about all the evil in the world, all the hatred and imagine ourselves running against the forces of darkness…” (Pg. 112). Nobody knew what Chris was searching for, and Chris himself probably didn’t know at times what he wanted either. Other then just wanting to go to Alaska, he did not have a great bond with his parents, “I’m going to let them think that I’m 'coming around to see their side of things,' and that our relationship is stabilizing” (Pg. 64). He met a couple of “rubber tramps” or people he met when he was hitchhiking. Chris wanted to hide his identity and he ben change his name to Alex Supertramp and he burned his money, “He arranged all his paper currency piled on the sand-a pathetic little stack of ones and fives and twenties and put a match on it,” (Pg. 29). Chris wanted new experiences and live a life he couldn’t live before. When Chris took this journey he did not communicate with any of his family members. Also he send post cards to the people he meant during his journey, “Please return all mail I receive to the sender. It might be a very long time before I return south. If this adventure proves fatal and you don’t ever hear from me again, I want you to know you’re a great man. I now walk into the wild,” (Pg. 69).
