Why did George Jackson’s mom put him into an all white school? Was it really to make him “smarter”? This section of the book really caught my attention because i don't believe a mother should ever put their child into that situation where they have to suffer racism. The mothers excuse was because putting him into an all white school would be a good idea but yet she didn't realize that jackson wasn't going to feel comfortable. He was going to be put down because of his background heritage. Jackson’s mom didn't realize that putting him into an all white school wouldn't change his knowledge. He says his mom was not there for him like a mom should. Jackson's mom thought that he is giving him the best education by taking him to that school but …show more content…
On page 41 of the book were Jackson wrote a letter to his father about this feeling betrayed by his mother by putting him into an all white school he says, “ What N. did to me in 1958 i can never forgive.* I can understand why she betrayed me to the whites and can even explain why she thought herself right in doing so, but i can't forgive her because she has not made any effort to to change her completely backward sympathies.”
I can relate to Jackson because i've been in situations where i have to do what my mom wants me to do and i don't have a choice about it because she is my mother and i have to respect her under all circumstances. My mom had forced me to an all english school that i wasn't quite ready for when i was in elementary because i had just moved from Mexico. She is focused on trying to be someone she's not(white), in order to be seen differently. On page 184, Jackson wrote, "In order for you to be intelligent, as you state it, you must like Western music, clothes , food, architecture, western education, religious superstition, pseudo philosophy, and Western ideals." St. Augustine believes that that's how our ways were sought and should have been but it does not need to be like this in order for someone to stand out and be intelligent. I myself can relate to this because I have been put into situations where I could wish to be someone else, I've wished to have grown wealthy just so that people can take me more serious because that's they way people work. My mom tells me to not lose faith and be myself because at the end of the day I am me and i can't change it but change other's perspective to see that color and wealth does not matter. During the discussion, Mar'jon said that, "In order to be intelligent, we must be at a certain stage; either being rich or white to be intelligent", but this shouldn't be this way because there's a lot of intelligent hard-working people that are not white or wealthy but they aren't noticed because they don't have the characteristics people have to be seen
