Segregation occurred in the USA, it was the separation of the African-American from the White Americans, separation occurred in places such as buses, drinking fountains, waiting rooms, employment and education. The White Americans believed that the African-Americans were a lower class as they were given agricultural work and did the jobs that the white Americans didn't want to do. Racial segregation occurred because of racism. Both racism and segregation were prominent throughout the colonial periods of the 1600’s and the 1700’s, when North America was apart of the worldwide British Empire. The British generally associated dark skin colour with behavioural traits such as evil and filth. When the British colonists came over to North America they brought along with them prejudice. As many of the property owners where white they refused to sell or rent their property to the African-Americans in ‘White neighbourhoods’. So the African-Americans found themselves starting their own neighbourhoods, these neighbourhoods were generally overcrowded and became unhealthy for the African-Americans to be living in. African-Americans who were courageous enough to buy homes in the ‘white neighbourhoods' soon realised that white Americans in the North America could be just as violent as southern Americans.
