Why Did Texans Fight in the Civil War?

It’s 1861, and you live on a plantation in Texas. Your whole world is changing; people are rallying against you, and hurting your family. All because of a practice that your great-great-great-grandfather passed down from generation to generation.The country that you once loved has changed forever, so what do you do to try and change it back? You fight for your family, your rights, and the state of Texas! In a letter to his mom, John Wesley Rabb wrote: “I am getting very oneasy about you all now I hear that the Yankeys are getting in to Texas” If the soldiers weren't worried about their family, then they never would've fought in the first place. Fortunately, for their families the men loved them so much that they would die in order to protect them. It’s estimated that in 1845 “ some 30,000 lived as slaves.” (texasourtexas.texaspbs.org) When people back then thought about their beloved state, Texas, they thought of slavery. Not only did they fight for slavery, but the reason why they fought was because they loved Texas. In 1860, Texas owned 182,566 slaves and only 421,649 people were free.
