Why Can’t We Be Friends?: The Rise of Tension between the US and USSR post-WWII Dating back to at least the start of communism, the world saw the gradual rise of the Cold War between the United States of America (USA) and the United Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR). Although the Cold War was may have been inevitable because of these countries differing visions of economic policy, governmental systems, and the postwar world in general, it was during the years 1941-1949 when it became imminent. In this time, suspicion and tension between the Superpowers increased due to the battle between communism and capitalism, as well as their different governmental systems.
The United States targeted three cities, but Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the ones chosen. An eyewitness tells of the horror that he experienced when the atomic bomb exploded. After dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, President Truman addressed the nation with a radio broadcast. A second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki a few days later, which caused Japan to unconditionally surrender, ending World War II.
From 1947-1991 the Cold War lasted between the United States and the Soviet Union. The two Administrations responsible for the victory over the Soviet Union in the Cold War are President Reagan and President Bush. President Reagan started his presidency in 1981, and after all his success while being president, he won re-election in 1985. Now, a key reason why the US remained successful with ending the Cold War after Reagan’s two terms was because in 1990 Reagan’s Vice President George H. W. Bush was elected President. This was a good turnout because Reagan and Bush shared a lot of the same ideas, so Bush was able to just pick up where Reagan left off.
Before Reagan’s election in 1980, the United States and the Soviet Union experienced détente, or a period of relaxed tension. However, Reagan was harsh on the Soviet Union, adopting a harsh anti-communism policy. By doing so, Reagan was able to help end the Cold War and cause the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Reagan saw the Soviet Union as being “prepared to commit any crime, to lie, to cheat”, and that they were “the focus of evil in the modern world” (Kennedy, 690).
“Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!” (Garrit 1) The falling of the Berlin Wall marked the ending of an era, the Cold War.
The Cold War was never actually a war because troops never fought each other. While other countries were a part of it, the United States and the Soviet Union were the countries that did most of the negotiations. The leaders of both were competing to prove that they had better nuclear weapons and the United States was trying to end Communism by defeating the Soviet Union. Many of the citizens in East Germany were unhappy with how life was in the East, which was part of the Soviet Union, and fled to the West which was the land belonging to France, Britain, and the United States. The Soviet Union was very mad at the citizens for leaving and came up with a plan to stop them.
When talking about the cold war, it is easy to pick America's side and say that Ronald Reagan won the war. What most people tend to tend to leave out is the history behind the actual collapse of the soviet Union and the slow erosion that had been happening since world war two. Just because he was around when the union collapsed does not mean he was the main reason behind. In fact, Reagan and Gorbachev were known to be on good terms and they communicated all the time. The cold war wasn’t just caused by the Russians vs Americans.
After World War II, everyone was surprised by the weapons used in it, especially the atomic bomb. The Cold War began right after World War II. The Soviet Union was coming to power, under Joseph Stalin, and taking over many European countries in form of a communist government. Since the United States was a capitalist party, and because of the Hitler incident, the US frowned upon communism greatly.
The Cold War did occur after WWII between the United States and The Soviet Union at the time of President Ronald Reagan administration. The Soviet union and its government had the ideology of spreading communism around the world. The United States was against communism and this why the country went to war with Vietnam. "Containment" was the ultimate goal by the U.S. to preventing communism from happen worldwide. My perception of the Cold War and the War on Terror is due to the lack of the United States government to understanding other countries language, culture and way of life.
When World War two ended, it did not bring the peace that so many millions of people across the globe longed for. Instead they were disappointed with the opposite of what they hoped would happen, the Cold War. The reason that the Cold war was so scary was because it was the first time in history where the world could literally blow end the human race. Why did this happen? Could it be stopped?
President Truman sent American military personnel into South Korea, but the war drifted to a stalemate in 1953. International quarrels ensued with the Bay of Pigs invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Cold War ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. However, the result from the Cold War was a stockpile of enough nuclear warheads to annihilate the rest of the world. With two nations at nuclear parity, the M.A.D. doctrine emerged.
The Cold War should be called a war because the literal definition of war is “a state of armed conflict between different nations or states or different groups within a nation or state”, and the cold war was tension between the democracies from the world of the western and the communist countries of Eastern Europe. Eastern Europe was being led by the Soviet Union against the west that was lead by the United States. Even though they technically didn’t declare war on each other, it was still a war. Many people had different opinions about the Cold War, an example of opinions was who started the Cold war? Some historians believe the Cold War was inevitable because of the hostilities from both America and the Soviet Union after World War II. America believed that the USSR was an expansionist country trying to spread an evil, communistic idea throughout the world. Although the countries never directly fought against each other, as they only fought in proxy wars, there was still extreme conflict. The United States responded to the Soviets actions in Germany, Europe, and their national actions. These responses were justifiable, or so many Americans at the time believed.
The word of war is heard everyday. However, it is not known what is the meaning of it. War is a state of competition or hostility between different people or groups.This competition can not be occurred just guns. It can be taken place politically, economically and ideologically. It is called that cold war.
