The reason as to why to government does this is because they want to provide equality amongst the people in which the handicapped people should also be treated equal as even though they are different from other people that are normal—they are still considered to be humans and that’s why they should be treated equal. 2. Why was the killing of Harrison Bergeron so significant? Did Harrison have to die for the sake of the society? It was significant because it shows that we all want to be equal but we can't. The definition of equality is different amongst people. Harrison Bergeron was introducing a new form of equality where everyone could be equal in their own way, shape and form. Handicaps were put in because competition=inequality. Harrison Bergeron questioned that by taking off his handicap. It was significant because it showed how we and the people in the story want equality but aren't quite sure about it. In the story, Harrison did have to die for the sake of society. If he had continued, then society would "fall apart" and everyone will be "unequal." These are the society's terms in the story and they abide by that. So in their eyes, yes he had to die or everyone else will follow suit. The idea of a new equal society was brought upon by Harrison, but the rest of the citizens will not be able to resist the higher-ups. 4.
