World War II was fought from September 1, 1939, to September 2, 1945. The war was fought between the allies and the axis. The allies were Great Britain, France, Soviet Union, and the United States. The axis was Germany, Italy, and, Japan. The war began with Japan bombing Pearl Harbor on December 12, 1937. By the end of the war, Germany had surrendered and the United States had bombed Japan, which put an end to the war on September 2, 1945. The United States was on the winning side of World War II because of industry jobs on the homefront, mass production of war materials, and the development of the atomic bomb that ended the war.
