Within days of becoming President of the United States, Harry Truman first learned of and was faced with the decision of whether or not to drop the world’s first atomic bomb. During Franklin D. Roosevelt’s presidency, he kept Truman completely in the dark, so when FDR passed and Truman was put in charge, he had no clue what was in store for him. With only a short while to contemplate, Truman adjudicated to drop it. Though it is still a very controversial topic of discussion today, Truman was correct in his decision to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The United States was the first power to successfully create the atomic bomb, and to use it. Although America may have been the first, other countries were close on our tails.
