Growing up in a small town off the Coast of Maine, I have grown up learning to do things on my own and that things in life aren 't handed to you. Since I was able to work I have been; racking blueberries, hauling lobster traps, digging for clams, working in diners, and much more. I have learned to be independent and to not have to rely on others. The one thing in life I have always wanted is to be able make something of myself and to build a successful future and not have to stress or struggle.

My educational goal is to earn a degree in Biology and Spanish from the University of California, Riverside, in hopes of getting a job inside the laboratory department at Kaiser. My goals have changed a lot over the last couple of years. Bouncing back and forth between majors and deciding if I even want to be taking college classes right now. I kept asking myself why I should struggle with hard classes when I have a good job right now. But then I stopped and repeated “good job right now.” My job as a twenty year old might support me right now but is it going to support me in ten or fifteen years when I’m trying to buy a house and support my family?

I mean, the English educational system (and many like it) is so structured that you could say that the grades we achieve at the end of our GCSEs, A-levels or degree seem to be predetermined by our teachers or the achievements in education we have had in the past. This highly deterministic system while may be accurate when dealing with some students, has the effect of discouraging other students from setting educational goals especially when those goals are not in entire agreement with the predictions of their teachers. This could even work the other way, they could be entirely satisfied with their predicted grades and therefore refrain from setting personal educational goals because they are confident that they will achieve their predicted grades regardless of
One cannot simply live a life aimlessly with no direction because to have such a life is not living but merely surviving. Candidly, I yearn for a life that is more than routine, a life worth living. Therefore, for me to have a notable life, I must create a direction [path] for me to follow by formulating a set of particular goals that I can achieve within a short time span. One of the specific goals is an academic goal that requires me to reach at least five scholarships before I graduate from high school. Not only do I make a goal for my academics, but I also construct a personal goal by vowing to read a Tale of Two Cities before I graduate as well.
