Symbolic interactionism is placing a meaning on an object and behave based of that meaning which might not be necessarily true. This theory is present within the novel because the Hmong ascribe a stigma to doctors and by doing so this causes them to interact with them differently. Another example of symbolic theory within the novel is the placenta that the Hmong symbolize. The placenta is symbolize as the passage for the soul and they were upset with the Western medicine for not being able to keep the placenta after child birth, however Dr. Fife did allow this which caused more interactions with Hmong for Dr. Fife. Also, even though doctors warn against the handling of the placenta because it may transfer disease, they ignore it because of the symbolic importance it have to them.
In Animal Dreams there are many animal symbols: coyote being an important Native American symbol, has been mentioned multiple times from pages 20-142. Coyotes are sometimes known as tricksters; however, in this book, Animal Dreams, it reads more of “beware of the dark side of things and play on your resources,” or we should look at something that we have been trying to avoid. We have learned that Codi had a miscarriage when she was younger, with a guy named Loyd. In chapter eight, “Pictures,” an incident is brought up where Hallie, Codis sister, and Codi are saved by Uda Dells husband, Eddie Dell, while trying to save coyotes in their burrow (was also mention earlier on page 20) (Kingsolver 77).
After reading, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Phillip Dick, I have gained a better understanding of the differences between humans and androids. The leader of the society where the book takes place is a man by the name of Wilbur Mercer. Not only is he the leader, but he also provides a form of religion to his people. Thompson illustrated what kind of world we would live in if work were to diminish. This world included excessive amounts of dominating robots, contentious politics, and leisure time. For the past couple of years people have said that robots will take over and dominate humans. This has always been a myth, or rather a topic that is brushed off of the shoulders. However, this fantasy is quickly becoming a reality due to current trends in technology.
The poet, Lascelles Abercrombie once said, “There is only one thing which can master the perplexed stuff of epic material into unity; and that is, an ability to see in particular human experience some significant symbolism of man 's general destiny.”. He talked about how powerful of a tool symbolism is and how it is the only thing that can truly define a highly complex ‘destiny’ or series of events. Symbolism is something that is found throughout Harper Lee’s book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee shows the reader that racism is a product of society, she portrays the matter through her symbolism of the mad dog, the birds and the bugs.
In Philip K. Dick’s novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, the world has become a degraded radioactive wasteland after a nuclear global war has rendered many species to be extinct and has forced people to seek more habitable land on Mars. Those deemed “worthy” of living on Mars are given an Android as a servant. Overtime, Androids acquired human-like characteristics leading to their desire to break free from captivity. The Android’s quest for freedom created a demand for bounty hunters to kill or retire runaway Androids. Alongside with the abundance of androids, animal ownership holds thematic emphasis.
Sometimes these androids go rogue, that is where Rick Deckard steps in. Rick is a bounty hunter for the San Francisco Police Department and his job is to find the rogue androids and annihilate it or “retire” it as they say in the story. In this collapsing world people could be identified as a “special” which means they are mentally disabled and not allowed to move to mars. When the Rosen corporation, which has a monopoly on the android business makes a new model, the Nexus Six.
