Americans from different time periods see American identity differently. Different effects in the time period may change your views. Back when there were slaves people thought you had to be white. Back when my grandma was in school she said it meant you 're “free to make your own choices”(mary eaton). Finally our generation may think differently from that. Although there are different time periods that think different things, everyone has their own opinion or views on american identity but different time periods may still bring people to different conclusions in time. Back when slaves were around it affected the views of people as an American, it made people think that you had to be white to be an American. I don’t know anybody that was alive in the slave ages to prove this but that isn’t needed. If you would just look at how america was actually put together that 's all the proof you need. Finally, people still alive like my grandma may say different. When I asked her this question, she left me with this answer “It means you’re free to make your own choices”(Mary Eaton). This comes across as the same type of answer I gave. This is because she still is alive now to realize what is going on to this day, which results in an opinion like others. If she had remembered what an American identity was like back then, then her opinion could have been different. As things settle down as well there hasn’t really been much to tweak the opinion of others. To end this off this really shows how changes in history and time may change people 's thoughts on America 's identity. Opinions on American identity are very scrambled rather through time or beliefs. Whether it be the slave ages, my grandma 's time, or my time,opinions change, and as opinions change new ones are created. Some may say a little tweak in time may not change much but i believe it can. THat 's why time periods can change what people think an American
