When people do drugs, they enter the brain. When drugs are entered in the brain, they come in between our brain’s natural processing and changes the way it works. Drugs affect three main areas of the brain; the brain stem, the limbic system, and the cerebral cortex. The brain stem is in charge of all the functions in the body. The brain stem links the brain with the spinal cord and moves muscle. The limbic system links together our emotions, and how we respond to certain things or events. Finally, the cerebral cortex which is the biggest part of the brain. It is divided into four areas called lobes. Some areas process information from our senses, allowing us to see, feel, hear, and taste. The front part of the cortex, known as the frontal cortex or forebrain, is the thinking center. It powers our ability to …show more content…
Drug use can lead to someone being addicted. Addiction is a brain disease that makes people obsessed with doing drugs, even when they really want to. This causes them to have terrible consequences for their health and personal life.
There are at least two ways drugs work in the brain: imitating the brain’s natural chemical messengers, and over stimulating the “reward circuit” of the brain. Drugs like heroin and marijuana can “fool” our receptors, lock onto them, and activate the nerve cells. However, they don't work the same way as a natural neurotransmitter, and the neurons wind up sending abnormal messages through the brain, which can cause problems both for our brains as well as our bodies. Other drugs like cocaine and meth cause nerve cells to release too much dopamine. This makes brain messages
