Amidst the idea of society having multiple effects
In Social Problems, Anna Leon-Guerrero (2016) she states, “… The functional perspective, examines the functions or consequences of the structure of society. Functionalist use a macro perspective, focusing on how society maintains social order” (13). Society has created expectations on what is viewed as acceptable or unacceptable behavior and this can include criminal behavior. This is any deviation from the social norms that are agreed by the majority of the community and the violation of any existing laws that is passed by legislation. For an example, a single parent losses’ his or her job and are worried whether the rent is covered with his or her last paycheck or whether they will qualify for food stamps.
Throughout the year we’ve learned and looked upon many different social views. The sociological concepts such as social interaction ,sex and gender, religion, race and ethnicity, and deviance are very important to society and have many social effects. My favorite tv show Law and Order(Special Victims Unit) covers and demonstrates these concepts in majority of the episodes. The show Law and Order consists of real life situations and issues which causes many different societal views or opinions throughout the show. Social interaction is one of the biggest sociological concepts.
Macro sociology on the other hand, is of a much grander scale. It is focuses “primarily on the big picture of society and its institutions” (Steckley, 2014, p.35). Looking at society as a whole with individual units that work together to make society function efficiently is the structural functionalism concept. Each unit has a part and is describe as institutions such as family, religion, education, politics, economy and inequality. Because structural functionalism looks at social structure and patterns of behavior it is able to create values for society. As well as, distinguish between visible and suppressed problems within the social structures that may need to be addressed. For instance, homelessness is indication of dysfunction in structural functionalism system.
In this way we can see this model at play at all times. Another example is to apply this system to society as a whole, which is described a bit easier, in the sense that the base in society can be considered the Means and the Relations of Production; which means class relations and characteristics of the means of production is how the society is fundamentally made up. These classes, the relations of production and the base as a whole modify the superstructure which is the overall idea of our society as in our culture, our politics, our media, our perceptions, etc. The superstructure is the society as a we know it while the base is the fundamental principles that make it up.
