Golf is a sport that is all about personal choice and preference. Each player has certain clubs and equipment that they like to use, and both competitive and recreational golfers, swear by the products they use. Golf is also a very expensive sport, and some players choose to make it that much more expensive by the buying certain types of golf balls. Outside of professional and top level amateur golf, many players are not able to reap the benefits of playing a more expensive ball. So why do people choose to play 50-dollar a box of golf balls compared to a more cost saving 25-dollar box of balls? People value the opportunity to hit longer drives and have more control around the green as higher than the price of the ball; therefore, justifying the purchase of the balls. Another reason why people value a more expensive golf ball is due to the perceived social status attached with expansive balls. Many professional players, play balls like the Titleist ProV1 or ProV1x, so the average player may feel that they are a better golfer if they play the same ball as the pros. Additionally, in the sport of golf, there is the perception that if an individual plays with nice equipment, they must be good at the game. Therefore, by playing the best available balls players feel that they are a step above golfers who do not play with similarly priced balls. In short, many golfers place the value of the ball as much more than the price of the box. Not only do players value the ball for its chance to improve their game, but they also value the social status and identity that comes with playing a more expensive golf ball. Another possible reason for why people value the more expensive golf ball is that they assume a causation between playing better golf when playing a more expensive golf ball.
