“For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others” (Nelson Mandela). Even though Mandela didn’t live in the time when slavery was legal, he fought against segregation in South Africa. He fought for those rights which led to his time in prison for twenty seven years. That didn't stop him from fighting against society, just like Huckleberry Finn did in the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain. Huck Finn helped a runaway slave become a civilized man, knowing that he was fighting against society, he didn't give up on his friend Jim. Huck knew that slavery was an important issue during the time he lived, Huck respected everyone, even if that person was a slave. He made Jim feel like he was a free man even though he wasn’t free. Huck and Jim both want freedom, but in different ways, Huck wants freedom from society, while Jim wants freedom from slavery and racism. …show more content…

Both of tthem are helping each other escape from society and slavery. They are both leaving things behind on their quest for freedom. They both yearn for freedom but they both take risks that could get themselves killed. Huck said “ So I reckoned I wouldn't bother no more about (right or wrong), but after this always do whichever come handiest at the time” (Twain 93). Huck knows he is doing wrong with running away, and helping Jim escape, he knows he is going against society.
