For many years, the topic of illegal immigration has been a part of every presidential platform. The problem at hand is that illegal immigrants have an effect on our nation. The United States of America has many surnames, the land of the free, the home of the brave, and the melting pot, are only a few. When thinking of debates over immigration reform, one generally pictures two opposite sides of the political spectrum battling it out over what they think should happen. Everyone has a different idea on what to do about illegal immigration, and neither party is willing to compromise enough to form an effective plan of action. Illegal immigrants pose a huge threat to our economy, crime rates, and school systems.

In July of 2015, illegal immigrant Mauricio Hernandez was convicted of rape, and the murder of the baby born of his victim. This man was sentenced to 50 years in prison. He is to be deported when his sentence has been fully served. (Examples) It’s a given that when there are more people there will be more crime. However there is a connection between illegal immigrants and crime rates. Between 2008 and 2014, 40% of all murder convictions in Florida were criminal aliens. In New York it was 34% and Arizona 17.8%. (Tancredo). Also, people who come here from other countries often bring illegal substances with them. In April of 2015, Sergio Quezada Lopez, whom had been deported four times, was arrested and sentenced to 15 years in prison for heroin trafficking. Crime rates are driven up when the number of illegal immigrants in the country rises. They break the law merely by coming here. Illegal aliens account for nearly 37% of federal prison sentences in 2014. “They represented 16.8 percent of drug trafficking cases, 20.0 percent of kidnapping/hostage taking, 74.1 percent of drug possession, 12.3 percent of money laundering, and 12.0 percent of murder convictions” (May) Illegal immigrants cause our nations crime rates to go up because they would also send the population
