Extreme sports are different from soccer, basketball, and other “normal sports” because they take the step above and do what many say is impossible. The most popular extreme sports are BMX racing, highlining, tow-in-surfing, ice climbing, free soloing, and BASE jumping. Extreme sports are on the rise and many teens and kids want to participate. This is false because risk is beneficial to humans. Risk is necessary in order for children to develop “risk management skills”(Burr, 3). An easy way to access risk is through extreme sports. Also, people don’t have to jump right into the hardest extreme sport they can find, it can be taken slow like driving. As they gradually better grasp on the sport they can move onto the more dangerous activities. Extreme sports give amazing experiences that are impossible without the risk aspect. Where is the fun and thrill in doing something that has no danger aspect? Everything has a hidden edge it is up to us to decide if we embrace it or hide from it. Risk is a part of our daily lives, it is dangerous to drive somewhere, yet we still do it. If someone gets in a car crash you are not going to say it was a risky activity so they should have seen it coming. Taking risks also makes it easier to stay calm in different situations. For instance, “As one solo rope-free mountain climber told the researchers, ‘If I panic, I’m lost, I’m dead.’ He learned to thwart panic and instead stay relaxed and focused, maintaining clarity and good judgment to help protect him.” (Brody, 13) As the body and mind get more used to fear it stays calm in situations.
