447 Words2 Pages

Summary: In 1973 when abortion was legalized everywhere, federal medicaid would pay for abortions for lower income woman. It paid for one third of the abortions in America. So in 1976 Congress passed the "Hyde Amendment". The Hyde Amendment was the banning of federal medicaid paying for abortions. In 1980 the supreme court found no violations of constitutional rights for woman on medicaid. This amendment was created so woman could stop getting abortions. Bolton case. The Hyde amendment only lets you get an abortion with medicaid if you were raped, or when a pregnant woman's life is endangered by a physical disorder, illness, or injury. But what if you aren't prepared to have a baby and you have a low income? People would use their rent money, or go hungry just to get an abortion. When on medicaid you can get an abortion for free and don't have to worry about goung hungry or using your rent money to get an abortion.

Opinion: My opinion on the Hyde amendment is that it's unnecessary and it's just kind of repeating history. I say it's repeating history because back in 1973 when the Doe vs. Bolton case had happened the abortion laws were a woman could only get an abortion if she was raped and got pregnant, the baby might be born with a serious birth defect, or the woman was endangered by the pregnancy. Now since the Hyde Amendment has happened woman who have low income can only get abortions through medicaid if she was raped, or is endangered by the pregnancy. Now i don't think it's fair that woman who have a low income can't use medicaid for an abortion. If she has a low income and gets pregnant and wants an abortion because she's not prepared finacially and physically to have a baby i think she should be able to get an abortion. Plus i feel as though this amendment is taking away/violating
