Characters have two ways to live their lives: following their fate or choose free will. William Shakespeare wrote the play, Romeo and Juliet, to show how characters can choose free will to live their lives. In Verona, Italy, there is a family feud between the Montague and Capulet families. The feud forces the main characters, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, to rebel against their parents because they are in love at first sight. The star-crossed lovers are forcing themselves to grow up which results in their tragic deaths. Juliet believes the couple is moving too fast and gives Romeo a chance to show and confess his love for her by getting married. Juliet also wants to be with Romeo after he is banished from Verona, so she is willing to fake her death to run away with him. Shakespeare documents, “Romeo, I come! This do I drink thee/ Romeo, Romeo, Romeo. Here’s drink” (Romeo and Juliet, 4.3. 63-64). Juliet puts herself under a sleeping potion that makes her look dead so that her parents will not worry about her and make it easier for her to run away with Romeo. She drinks this potion as a part of her plan with Friar, so Juliet and Romeo can live happily ever after. Juliet makes this choice to have an uninterrupted life with Romeo and not be threatened by others. Shakespeare drafts, “I wake before the time that Romeo/ Come to redeem me? There’s a fearful point!” (Romeo and Juliet, 4.3. 32-33). Juliet is worried she will wake up before Romeo is there to take her away to live in Mantua together. She is scared that Romeo will get there too late and she will actually die. Juliet chooses to take the potion for Romeo because she wants to be with him in peace and have nothing stand in their way.
