Why Do You Think Homework Should Be Handed Out

After a full day of school, students come home and work on homework for around three hours. No extra-curricular activities. No friends and family, just homework and stress. To fix this, teachers should not hand out mandatory homework to students in public schools, K through 12, because it takes away from free time and adds loads of stress on kids. One of the reasons people feel homework should not be handed out is because it stresses kids out. Studies show that homework is a stressor for 99% of students and is a main stressor for 56% of students. Students say that homework itself stresses themselves out more than the actual test itself that the homework is preparing students for. Following that, high schoolers get around three hours of homework each night. Three hours of homework each night in addition to a full day of school is mentally taxing on the students. Also, according to Sandra Levy, “kindergarteners get around 25 minutes of homework and first and second graders get around 28 to 29 minutes per night.” According to the NEA (National Education Association) and NPTA (National Parent Teacher Association), “kindergarteners shouldn’t receive any homework and first and second graders shouldn’t receive as much.” All this homework then adds up to one thing: stress. …show more content…

Students feel more obligated to do their homework than to spend time with family and doing hobbies or clubs after school. When kids can’t participate in clubs or hobbies after school they don’t have a way to relieve their stress so it all builds up. In addition, if students aren’t able to participate in hobbies and clubs because of heavy homework loads, students are not gaining the benefits and skills those activities have to offer.
