In the preface of “Night” a book and memoir about the holocaust, by Elie Wiesel, he writes that he doesn’t know or no longer knows what he meant to achieve by writing the memoir. Earlier in the preface we are informed that the reason he began writing “night” was because he believed that he left the camps alive by chance, and that he didn’t deserve it more than anybody else thrown into German concentration camps. After realizing this he didn’t want to waste what he had and because of that he immediately set pen to paper and began writing a book that would bring its writer the nobel peace prize. But what did he achieve in this book?
In the second painting, representing chapters 4-6 of Night, it shows more of what life was like inside the concentration camps for Elie. Things there were very dark and sad so therefore the sky is very frightening and messy. There is also gray clouds in the sky and over Elies Head. These clouds and dreadful and followed Elie everywhere, mentally. Also, throughout Elie’s time in the camp he became a slave to the Holocaust and lost a lot of things in his life.
Throughout Night, by Elie Wiesel, the narrator, Wiesel, was subjected to changes within his ideals and religious beliefs. When Wiesel was first introduced to the book, he was a devout Jewish boy who loved his father and had his total faith in God. Over time, Wiesel began to change as a result of being beaten down almost every day and witnessing his fellow Jews being worked to death or simply killed for not being fit enough. "I watched it all happening without moving. I kept silent.
In this portion of the book it is easy to imagine the nooses around the necks of the men and boy. Because readers can so clearly see the devastating scene, they will have a hard time forgetting about the brutal, unfortunate actions that took place during the Holocaust. Imagine living in a world where no one had humanity. This was most shown then the Nazi soldiers took the jews belongings and shaved all their heads to humiliate them. In the book “Night” by Elie Wiesel this in many instants was shown along with many others downgrades of the jews. Many cases throughout the book “Night” the innocent jews no longer felt like humans and more like dogs. Try to imagine being treated like an abused animal having zero freedoms and to top it off being trapped with no options or help.
At the start of Night Elie Wiesel's emotions went from Disbelief to Afraid. For example, at the start of the book “Night” on page 32, he said " I pinched myself: was I still alive? Was I awake? How was it possible that men, women, and children were being burned and that the world kept silent? My evidence supports my claim because at the start of the book Elie Wiesel is disbelief because he doesn't even know if he is really living or if it is a dream.
In his memoir Night, Elie Wiesel details that the Jews of his hometown Sighet Hungary, cling to an illusion of safety up until the moment of their arrival at Auschwitz. Mosche the Beadle provides the first evidence of potential danger; however the townspeople choose to ignore the warnings and instead condemn Mosche the Beadle as a lunatic. The Jews of Sighet choose to sacrifice the ”joy in[Mosche the Beadle’s] eyes”(7) to maintain a sense of security and isolation from the actions of the Hungarian police. Upon the seizure of power by a pro-nazi party the Jewish people merely view the change “in abstract”(9). They do not allow themselves to rationalize the event. Akiba Drumer, fellow prisoner of Elie's, was once optimistic and deeply religious. However, Elie describes how the brutal conditions and pain of the camp had destroyed him. Having lost all faith in God, Drumer was weak and defeated and knew he could no longer fight. Elie utilizes metaphors and imagery to emotionally affect the reader in order to convey Drumer's empty and suffering state. Elie describes him, saying "His eyes would suddenly go blank, leaving two gaping wounds, two wells of terror."(76)
Elie Wiesel once wrote, “Never shall I forget that night, the first night in the camp, which has turned my life into one long night, seven times cursed and seven times sealed... Never shall I forget the little faces of children, whose bodies I saw turned into wreaths of smoke beneath a silent blue sky. Never shall I forget those flames which consumed my faith forever… Never shall I forget these things, even if I am condemned to live as long as God Himself. Never” (Wiesel Forward).
There is a lot of people going through things like America who use the human rights that the countries came together and made something called the human rights. Yet have these rights been actualized, no and places like in South America there is still child slavery. Can it be possible? Yes, this could and there are many ways this can be possible, and it maybe won’t happen in my age but maybe in others. The book Night by Elie Wiesel was a very tragic book yet even during the time of the holocaust there were people who helped spread human rights in when they were in a great demise of Hitler.
During the Holocaust between 1933-1945 over 6 million jews were killed because of their heritage. In our society there is a big issue with violence,intolerance,and marginalization so how can we resolve this peacefully?.(sentence tying these two things together)”There is no truth sure enough to justify persecution”(Milton n.pag.).Although countries value safety and security, people with different races,religion, and gender are often persecuted. In many cases people with different religions are persecuted because of their beliefs or rituals. In the book Night by Wiesel, people of the Jewish religion are persecuted by the Nazis because of their religious beliefs.
The author says “I have nothing to say of my life during this period. It no longer mattered.” (Wiesel, pg. 107) These people were so plagued by the death and carnage that they witnessed, the lives that they had afterwards had no meaning. They were followed around by the haunting memories of their past, and it took the value from the lives that they had afterwards.
Many people might say that they feel the pain that others went through during the holocaust. You never know the real feeling and what it is they went through being put in the camps. Nearly all was close to death and many were to close and didn't make it. In the memoir “Night” By Elie Wiesel, himself explains and talks about his own struggles at night and of being put in a near life death experience. In the memoir theirs a father and son who shares the same experience and story, but they go through it together since they all that they have standing strong.
There are many things that people in current and past society take for granted, such as housing, food, and freedom. The thing that is important to remember though, is that these things that people take for granted are all a part of their basic human rights. Human rights means the rights which every human being owns. Thought, after many years of defining these rights also a few people are not applying to them and a few people are all set to violate them. It is not possible for human rights to be actualized because people are treated cruelly.
In this selection, Wiesel uses phrases such as “.. flames that consumed my faith forever” (Wiesel, 34), “... murdered my God and my soul and turned my dreams to ashes.” (Wiesel, 34), and “Never shall I forget those things..” (Wiesel, 34).
