Throughout the book The Catcher In The Rye Holden life is tragic and full of disappointments but he tend to somewhat grow up. Holden grow up in a harsh way and tend to realize how people view things differently than him. Since Holden tend to always drift off his own thoughts lot , it like he’s taking three steps forward and then five steps back. In my opinion he doesn’t really grow up, maybe a little but tend to still make childish moves. He will go back and forth with growing up and being childish. In Holden mind everything is so depressing and sad because all he sees is the bad in everything which make it hard for him to grow up and understand. Like in the middle of the book he thought twice about running away starting new life. One with Sally and one where he’d be a deaf mute , he is basically trying to isolate himself from everyone. He was thinking of things that he knows wouldn’t really happen. The thought of it is nice but the moment you come back to reality he’s know it won’t happen. He has a very wild imagination but not a good one he’s more negative. Also when Holden open up and told his sister about his plan she wanted to come with him. He freak out and said no , he was extremely angry . His type of angry will drive people away or make people concerned. Plus the fact he wants to isolate himself from his family is very tragic. See it hard to see growth in Holden when he has a mind like this. We know through the book Holden has depression. In certain chapters he would mention that he would want to die or wish that the bad thing would have happen to him. Everytime i read a part where he said he wanted to be die it made me worry about him more. I say that because each time it would just worst . Additionally with his thoughts made it more scarier. The only growth i really saw was when he was with his sister. When she gave him money and he got emotional and realize what he was doing and eventually gave the money back. At some points when Holden was with his sister or thinking about her he would sometimes have good thoughts and wouldn’t draft off so much. However Holden end up arguing with his sister when she said she wanted to go with him to run away. At this point he showed so much anger he even said he felt like he wanted to slap her but he didn’t.
