In this story Ponyboy and his best buddy is Johnny feel alone. Pony says in the beginning of the book “Then suddenly wishing i had some company” this creates some background on Pony he never seems to want anyone around until he starts feel like no one is around, he feels alone. Johnny on the other hand didn't like his life very much, his parents couldn't care less about him, they never did. This makes him feel alone even when he's with people that are like him, because he feels like he needs parents in his life people who love him as much as he wished his family did. He felt as if no one understood him 100% and he was alone. “I walk in that house nobody says anything. I walk out and nobody says anything. I stay away all night, and nobody notices. At least you got Soda. I ain't got nobody” Johnny claims (51). This allows the reader to understand that Johnny feels very alone and feels like he doesn't have any special bonds with anyone like Pony did with Soda.
So being part of a group isn't always a good thing you can still very much feel alone just like Johnny and Pony did. Johnny and Ponyboys journey creates and understanding for why that sometimes is, but despite that, a smart girl once said “things are rough all over” ~Cherry Valance.
