Holocaust Writings: How Does the Human Spirit Triumph? The Holocaust was a tragic event for Jews in Europe. Hitler and his Nazi party rose to power. Hitler despised the Jews and wanted them gone. He blamed many of Germany’s defeats on the Jews. At this time Germany was going through a depression. Hitler and his Nazi party seized this opportunity to turn Germany into their vision and perspective. In the end, around 6 million Jews were killed in the Holocaust. Although the Holocaust was a tragic time for the Jews, some of them were still positive and empowered their human spirit. Many time laughter would make Jews forget about what they’re going through. It would also make their spirits triumph. “I hurt mama to give me life? Why? Didn’t I just pop out of her belly button? They all burst into laughter. Papa, Dora, Even mother (Doc A). Syvia and her family are full of laughter after syvia said that line. Her family forget what’s going on in the world and their human spirit triumphs through a time like this. In the book “The Book Thief”, a young girl named Liesel is having a snowball fight in her basement with her father and Max Vandenburg, a Jew in hiding. “Arschloch! Papa yelled. Liesel, give me some of the snow. A whole bucket. For a few minutes they all forgot. There was no more yelling or calling out, but they could not contain the small snatches of laughter” (Doc C). Many Jews used nature to get away and forget what’s going on in the world. This would help because nature had a big impact on their thoughts. In July of 1942, a 13-year old girl named Anne frank writes a diary entry in her journal at a secret annex where she and her family hid from the Nazi for two years. “I look up at the blue sky and the bare chestnut tree, on whose branches little raindrops shine, appearing like the silver, and at the seagulls and other birds as they glide in the wind” (Doc D). Anne Frank uses nature as a pass time to get away from the world. Nature helps her human spirit triumph over the time. Etty Hillesum was another person who used nature in her writing to use as a way to triumph through the tough times. “…looking up at one of these black-and-silver birds as it moved among the massive deep-blue rain clouds.
