Journal The story “Why Don’t You Carve Other Animals” happened outside of a hospital in Zimbabwe when this country still controlled by Europeans. A carver and a painter sit outside of a hospital and sell products. The painter is curious why the carver only carve elephants and giraffes. The carver answers the question with deep-meaning. The painter and the carver create sculptures and pictures about animals and natural scenery from their country-Zimbabwe. It’s ironic because even though they create beautiful art products, they may not see these animals or scenery ever. Also, their sculptures and pictures are harmonic, but Zimbabwe is not harmonic. Historically, due to European invasion of Zimbabwe, Zimbabweans had been losing their autonomy for a long time. When the painter compares the elephant and the giraffe, he says they are equal because both of them have their own ways to reach the leaves. However, back to the former part, the carver carves elephant’s tusk with its body. Same as Zimbabweans, they have same body structure with Europeans, Zimbabweans and Europeans are literally equal. Nevertheless, Zimbabweans do not get great wealth, their land even become colony. It does not mean that Zimbabweans do not have the abilities to make money. They are just forced to hand in their wealth and live into slums by European
