Since the beginning of the United States, there have been over 150 school shootings; and 70 percent of these fatal attacks have been in the the past 70 years. The increase in attacks has had many different arguments, anywhere from guns becoming more readily available, to the fact that psychiatric institutions becoming deinstitutionalized and mental health going unnoticed until it is too late. In any case, it is no doubt that something must be done to lower or stop the increased number of attacks in recent history. The question, though, is “What?” The million dollar answer has yet to be found and will most likely remain in limbo for some time to come. Some extreme members of Congress believe that guns should be banned altogether, while others …show more content…

If it is known that the teachers are armed ready to neutralize any threat that comes to harm the children, shootings would drastically decrease solely on the fact that people often value their own lives. If a shooter walks into a school and is immediately stopped, it will be a sign to the others planning something in the future to not even attempt to attack. As it is in many western states, some teachers are already armed. While there have been no attacks in Colorado, Texas, Utah and other lands considered desolate and far spread, teachers are yet still bringing guns on campus. All of these schools remain safe from shooters for one reason: the teachers are already armed and ready to protect the children inside at all costs. The reason behind these schools being armed is that the states they’re in are bleak and barren, where it could take anywhere from 20-40 minutes for police officers to arrive (Shah, “Debated”). There are already over eight states arming teachers in the U.S. Colorado, New Jersey, Texas, Connecticut, Washington, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Arkansas already have weapons on campus. The nation agrees, too; 64 percent of Americans polled believe that some form of security needs to be in place in schools. This is because 60-70 percent of teachers would be armed, for all teachers to be armed would be overkill. A certain amount of teachers would be armed based on shooting scores under a trained professional’s eye. This would roughly agree with the bill proposed by the California GOP in early 2013 which was provoked by the Sandy Hook shooting in late 2012. The proposal (AB 202) would act like an air marshal law, whereas the guns are out of sight, and out of mind. The proposal goes on to explain that not every teacher would be armed, just those who score high enough to qualify as professionals, preferably veterans and ex police force if possible (McGreevy). As previously stated, this would also extremely cut down on the time it takes to neutralize a threat; a school resource officer (SRO) can only cover so much space at one time, and usually it is just one officer with a pistol. This shooter can have a wide array of weapons, anywhere from a pistol to a Bushmaster (the rifle that was used during the Sandy Hook Shooting in 2012) that can chamber NATO 5.56 and .223 Remington rounds. While the gun that is being used is important, the placement of the bullet is even more important; meaning that the more teachers that are armed in a certain wing or building of a school, the more coverage there is of knowing where the shooter is and being able to
