Is it time to get rid of the American tradition of school sports? In the article, “Yes, It’s Time to Scale Back” the author Amanda Ripley expresses how sports are harmful to the students and school funds. However, in the article, “No Sports Are More Important than Ever” by Tim O’ Shei discusses how school sports benefit students. The article, “10 Reasons Why High School Sports Benefit Students” by Grace Chen also backs up why school sports are important. School sports are a reason for failing grades; on the other hand, there are many positive benefits to having them in schools.
Having sports integrated into high schools is important since it allows students to have the ability to gain valuable character traits needed for society with the addition of allowing lower income students to be able to enjoy the sport. Sports, especially team sports, give students the ability to learn valuable traits like “discipline, teamwork, a drive for success, the desire to be held accountable and a willingness to have their performance measured” (Sato). These skills mentioned in the article “The Case for High School Sports” by Kai Sato are vital to be functioning members of society. If students were to only focus on academics their whole life, it will only be beneficial till they exit college, since in someone's everyday life they will not be calculating the area of a circle but they will be communicating with
Unequal Funding for High School Sports High school sports are a very important part of our school, promoting not only good physical health, but encouraging athletes to find success in other areas of their life as well. As a school, we should want our sports teams to push to be the best they can be, which leads to the question how will our sports teams improve if they all aren’t funded equally? Unequal funding for our sports teams today is unfair because no sport is more or less important than the other, funding for the sports shouldn’t depend on the popularity of the sport, sports with better equipment are able to perform better, and those without good equipment are set up for failure, and giving less money to some sports tells the athletes
I think that if the school cut all the sports programs that everyone who plays them would get really mad. And not only the players would be mad but the fans and people that like to watch them would also be very upset. This is why I would be for it because the players already whine enough but if they got there sports taken away we would never here the end of it. So that and also the money made for the sports program alone makes most of our schools money from people paying to get into the games. Some of the other reasons that the school should not cut the sports program is that’s how the school makes most of its money and they can’t save if they don’t have money coming in.
Many people have the mindset that in High school and College is all about the different types of sports that the school might offer. Those types of people are the owns that might think that it’s better for the school to send more of the funding thats the school gets to spend it on sports rather than education. Which in the article that I read “ The case against high school sports” by Amanda Ripley explains all the different types of perspective that others have on the idea that sports in general that is just a waste of money and that school should spend the money on better equipment for educational reasons and for new teachers. Through out the whole article there are two different side on why sports shouldn’t be in high school and why sports
I believe that student athletes should be paid because they dedicate an excessive amount of time to sports, miss out on a degree because of monetary issues, and bring in an excessive amount of money. In the first place, I believe collegiate level athletes should be paid because they are dedicating an excessive amount of time to sports. In the article ”Should athletes be paid to play” Jared Walch states, “According to an NCAA survey conducted in 2011 Division I football players average 43 hours a week... This means that on top of classwork and homework, athletes are working a full time job.”
"[Student] Athletes are little more than indentured servants," according to Nancy Armour, USA Today sports columnist ("Paying"). Major issues get overlooked by Armour and others who support paying college athletes. The National College Athletic Association (NCAA) must push back against increasing pressure to pay student-athletes to preserve the principles of college sports, the college experience and uphold the teamwork of a school. In 1987, Southern Methodist University received the death penalty (Dobbs).
My first reason is that the kids get stressed about handling sports, a job, and school. Recent studies say 1 out of 4 athletes get stressed from juggling all those responsibilities. Expert Andy Schwarz say “paying kids for athletics would cut down on 50 percent of that stress.” An article from Debate Club supports my opinion and “The huge amount of money being made off college sports has led some to question whether student-athletes can be considered amateurs any longer, and whether they
There are so many collegiate athletes nowadays. Just think how many players are on a college football team? If the colleges paid student athletes, they would need more fundraisers and other money-raising events to get by. My final reason is you never know what the student athletes will spend that money on. Sure, some athletes could put that money to good use, helping their families out if they are in need of some money to help them live.
Making Distribution Fair and Ethical One solution can be the way the NCAA will go about distributing money. The money given to college athletes will vary. Not every athlete at every school will be getting the same exact amount of money. The amount of money will depend on what school the athlete attends, or how big the university is. It will also depend on how much revenue the specific sport brings to the university.
High School Sports Should be Funded Every year 300,000 students are participating in sports (Gould 1). The School District has been funding the athletics program, which has been benefiting many of the students’ lives for several years. The discontinuation of high school sports will cause many students to loose the health, social and educational benefits provided by participating in athletics. The School District should continue to fund sports because they benefit students.
The stress can get so intense, it feels paralyzing. That’s why it is important than ever for schools to invest in their athletic programs,” states the sports article “Should Schools get rid of Sports.” Schools should keep their sports programs because they help improve academics, help improve mental and emotional health, and improves social skills like being on a team. Schools should not get rid of their sports programs because they help with student’s academics.
Should schools be paying for sports or should kids join sports teams at other places? Sports can be a good experience for some students and can build confidence, friendships, and give kids a healthy activity to do outside of school, but could schools save more money if they did not have sports and use the money to build a better academic environment? High school sports
Sport in high school shouldn’t be taken away because it allow new students to make friends a lot easier. If we didn’t have sports in schools then there wouldn’t be professional sports anymore because the kids won’t be able to practice and not every kid has money to buy a ball or net and basketball hoop. It helps the student’s grades in classes because if they have low grades in one class they can’t play the sport so they try their hardest to raise the grade so they can play the sport. This is why I think they shouldn’t take away sports in high schools.
For a normal high school student their routine is always the same. Wake up, go to school, come home, watch TV or relax, and the common phrase of “oh I’ll do my homework later.” While a student athlete has to go to school and the to their sport of choice then they have to do their homework, so their grades don't slip and preventing them from participating in their sport of choice. While many may argue that our high school shouldn't be funded from lack of proper education I believe that our high should fund sports because, sports teach skills needed in the job world and can improves grades. You see in sports movies and TV shows that the athletes have a strong sense of leadership, well that isn't just a silver screen concept.
