Tim O’Brien, in his novel The Things They Carried, provides a first-hand account of the experiences of a platoon of young American soldiers in the Vietnam War. Through the stories he tells, O’Brien is able to relate to the reader the atmospheres of the situations that the soldiers were placed in. He also emphasizes the roles of both the physical and mental “things” that he and every other soldier carried on their missions throughout the war. Many of the physical objects that the soldiers kept with them either served a vital purpose to their survival or an emotional purpose to help remind them of the things they loved.
My hero doesn’t fight monsters in terrible conditions, and rarely with her bare hands. However this hero doesn’t have to travel across an ocean to fight monsters. The poem and movie of “Beowulf” are very different and they are also sort of similar. There are a lot more differences between the two than you would expect and while some of them are minor differences others are drastically different. The Epic poem Beowulf, based around a code of conduct called the Anglo Saxon code. This code is a rule book in a sense made for the Anglo Saxon people. The code in depth describes what the warriors of the Anglo Saxon need to do to obtain glory, fame, respect and to ultimately be remembered. Throughout the story the main character Beowulf shows all three of these attributes, resembling the Anglo Saxon code. Beowulf’s motivations are expressed in three different ways.

Beowulf manifests the features of a literary epic by reflecting the Anglo-Saxon warrior culture from which it came from, and containing great, descriptive language and plots that include great battles and conflicts. The warrior culture is evident from the explanation of the story in Journeys where Beowulf, along with his group of warriors, sails to Denmark, ready to defeat Grendel to the very end of the excerpt where defeating Grendel brings Beowulf honor, pride, and glory. “He was happy with his / nightwork / and the courage he had shown” (826-828). The benefit of the risk in Beowulf is getting glory while saving lives for what he believes is right, the benefit of the risk in The Deep is to live life to fullest until it’s your time to go, the benefit of the risk in the article is risking the lives of yourself and others to house exotic animals as pets. In the story Beowulf, he kills three monsters to save his village and another king’s region.
The Perfect Hero In every heroic tale, there lies a theme of balance in values. Every hero is said to possess a fatal flaw; whether they overcome this flaw or let it define who they are is up to them. In the epic poem Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, it is not particularly hard for the reader to point out their perceived flaws of our hero: arrogance, pride, egotism. Yet, Beowulf stands tall in the poem as the perfect hero, adored and praised by all.
Beowulf risked his life multiple times by battling Grendel and Grendel’s mother to save the people of Denmark. He also embarks on a battle with a dragon as an old man ascending on the Geats Throne. Each battle Beowulf fought has all been for the safety of his people. Although the Knight did not battle as a deed for his people, he also is viewed as a humble person his battles were for a purpose greater than himself. The knight never talks about his brave and valorous deeds.
