In 1941, Eudora Welty published her short story, Why I live at the PO, about a dysfunctional family. The story contains many different members of the family, including Sister, Stella-Rondo, Mama, Papa-Daddy, and Uncle Rondo, and they can be described in different ways. The words in the following paragraphs are words that I would use to describe Sister, Stella-Rondo, and Mama. When I think of words to describe Sister from Why I live at the PO, I think of frank, witty, and jealous. I would describe her as frank because she was always making comments about her sister, Stella-Rondo, no matter how they actually sounded. I would describe Stella-Rondo as manipulative because she gets everyone to believe what she says and finds ways to turn everyone against her sister. For example, when Stella-Rondo first arrives back home after her failed marriage, she convinces everyone, except Sister, that Shirley-T is adopted even though she looks just like Papa-Daddy and Mr. Whitaker, and then lies about Sister saying something about Papa-Daddy's beard, so he gets mad at Sister, just because Sister didn’t believe that Shirley-T was adopted. Stella-Rondo also tells Uncle Rondo that Sister said something about his appearance because Sister said something that she didn’t like, which turned Uncle Rondo against Sister. She can also be described as spoiled because she gets everything she wants with no questions asked. When she was eight, she wanted one of those add-a-pearl necklaces, so Papa-Daddy got her one, and she threw it away in the trash when she was nine. Stella-Rondo is one of those people who is used to having her way, and her version of the truth accepted all the time. I consider her an attention seeker because the second she comes home, she instantly demands all the attention of the family. For these reasons and more, I consider Stella-Rondo manipulative, spoiled, and an attention
