Overview Many people wonder how to get involved in the communities they live and work in. They wonder if they should go to their neighbor’s house for brunch or if being a chaperone at a school dance really makes a positive impact on their community. The truth is, it does. Being involved in a community is essential in one’s life, especially at a young age. Today, the most prominent way to be involved is to volunteer. This is one of the most overlooked steps in one’s life. The most common excuse to not volunteer is that one is too busy, or there is not enough time in the day. As well as there are many organizations in the Phoenix area that are a good start for volunteering. Some examples are food banks including St. Mary’s Food Bank, St. Vincent de Paul, and Feed my Starving Children (depicted above). Further, there are many community service clubs in schools, for example National Honors Society and Key Club. These clubs help students get connected to different volunteer opportunities with classmates. These are beneficial in leading one to get more involved in his or her community by being a member of these clubs. In the second step it is important to know the qualifications to volunteer at each event for example, age requirements, strength to move heavy objects, or if a group is needed to sign up or if you can sign up alone. These are all necessary information to be aware of when volunteering.

One benefit is being able to help others and create a difference in one’s community. In the article “Effects of Volunteering”, the authors express the interests of the volunteers are happier than others when they state, “Older adults who volunteer and who engage in more hours of volunteering report higher levels of well-being” (Marrow-Howell et al. par. 3). From the information in this article it is shown that one who volunteers is going to have a greater well being than those who choose not to volunteer. The satisfaction of knowing that one has helped another person creates a feeling of blissfulness and keeps people happy. Another benefit is that volunteering is a selfless act and proves that selfless kind acts can affect another's life. By being a volunteer and physically seeing the difference that the accomplishments of the group made creates a feeling of hope in the hearts of all. Additionally, volunteering is also a great way for one to get involved in high school by meeting new friends as they complete tasks for a greater cause.
