1. I heard about the Dental Hygiene Program at Northampton Community College from NCC alumni. (Here is a great spot for you to sell yourself. You have an opportunity to highlight the Job shadows you have completed that others may not have. If none of the hygienists you shadowed attended Northampton you can at least discuss that watching them work reaffirmed the necessity to find a school that can fully prepare you with the knowledge and skills required to perform the occupation.) I asked hygienists where they went to college and two different family friends of mine both went to Northampton and were part of the Dental Hygiene Program. When I visited the University of Pittsburgh, one of the staff had graduated from NCC and I was able to see what all she accomplished with her education at Northampton. Ever since I was in the fourth grade, I have had a love for the dental field. At the age of nine, my mind was set on becoming a hygienist and it has not changed at age eighteen. The ability to care for children, teenagers, adults, and the elderly while building relationships with patients is something that I want in a career. Some careers you may help an individual, but never see them again. Dental hygiene is a career where I can build interpersonal relationships. This profession will allow me to have flexible hours and work in a private practice. I can earn my bachelor’s degree and then teach or work in public health. One day I aspire to go on a mission’s trip to Africa and perform dental cleanings to impoverished countries. In high school, I took five years of French and that would help me as I travel to Africa.
