What They Do

Paralegals have many duties while at their workplace. This includes; investigating and gathering facts in a court case, research laws relevant to the case, maintain documents, gather and arrange evidence, write and summarize reports, get affidavits and other formal statements that may be used as evidence and help lawyers during trial. Paralegals use technology to conduct all of their work and research. Paralegals’ specific duties may vary depending on which line of work they are on. Paralegals may also specialize in other legal areas, such as personal injury, criminal law, employee benefits, intellectual property, bankruptcy, immigration, family law, and real estate.

Work Environment

Paralegal’s work in offices, but occasionally travels for more Intel. Their work can be fast-pace and quickly done. To be a paralegal you must be good at multitasking on projects while under pressure of a tight deadline. Many employers prefer the employee to have a bachelor’s degree. One will most likely require at least on previous job in an office setting. Employers also desire a background of nursing studies. One would need communication skills, computer skills, interpersonal skills, organization skills, and research skills.

Pay

The median pay of a paralegal is $49,500 in the year of 2016. The lowest 10% earned $31,070 and the highest 10% earned $80,260. The pay varies from the paralegals environment. Legal assistants in the federal government are payed the most.

Job Outlook

The percentages for paralegals are an 8% from 2014 to 2024. Law firms want to increase efficiency and reduce their costs. They are also trying to reduce billing costs as clients push for less expensive legal services.
