Intro Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., made a profound statement, which can be used to understand school social work or just social work in general, “Never, never, be afraid to do what’s right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society’s punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.”(Mintz, 2014) The field of social work I would like to pursue is school social work. School social work is an underpopulated field with a variety of strengths as well as challenges. But over all contribute to the wellbeing of all children. Some examples of challenges would be getting the child’s home, school and community to work together, so that the child will be successful. Next, making sure that students have an opportunity to receive equal education. Then, making sure students are mentally, physically and emotionally available to learn. Some new challenges that school social workers now have to deal with are increased gang activities and bullying.
