Working for Shelby Residential and Vocational Services has been a pleasure for me because I love helping people. It has been a challenging job working with people with disabilities. You have to stay focused and have a lot of patience in order to make it through the work day. That is why I choose to do this type of work. It gives me an opportunity to work on my patience level and learn to stay more focused. Working with my clients enables me to help train them so they can get a job, have a safe and healthy environment. I am an advocate for people with disabilities. Getting respect for the individuals is not always easy because people to do view them as being equal. It takes time, effort, and team work to make their lives have a purpose. I am able to teach certain skills that helped enhance their lives and enabled them to be comfortable in performing certain task that they might not feel capable of doing. I feel a since of joy knowing that I am one of the people who taught someone how to read and write. Teaching someone who has never been able to read or write was a challenge, but we did. If I did not have the cooperation of the clients and people in the work force, they would not have a job today. This job has helped me to practice more patience and understanding of the needs of people with disabilities. I do this by paying close attention to their reaction to certain situations so I will know when it is time for them to quit or take a break when they are performing a certain task. I always take the time to help assist them with their everyday living responsibilities, like picking out outfits that are appropriate for job interviews and other task they cannot do independently.
