The novel Various Positions written by Martha Schabas illustrates the art of ballet in its truth, and how the romanticization of ballet is rooted in its brutality, and notably in this novel, damage to perception. There is one ideology that consumes the entirety of the novel, ballet is beautiful, the forms shaped by the idyllic thin body portray extreme elegance, the strain put onto the human body weighing you down until your mind is numb to it all. According to Georgia, “Every movement harbours a secret fall, and it's the danger that makes it beautiful”. (pg. 43). Despite this, she describes ballet as something that subconsciously takes over her body, including her thoughts.
I have been dancing for four years now and know for a fact that dancing is a sport. Dancers practice everyday to improve like other sports. I have danced before but it was not as serious until I joined Color Guard my freshman year. Color Guard was mainly contemporary and ballet.
Ballet has influenced not only dancers but many other people throughout the world. From the beginning, ballet has had a significant impact on the performing arts for both the performers and spectators. It has played an important role in helping to shape the performing arts into what it is today. The creation and development of ballet brought about a new way of expressing feelings and telling stories as a part of performing arts and has been the foundation for many other dance styles.
The instructor and students were Sri Lankan, and the class was taught in Sinhalese, my first language. We danced to traditional songs, and I felt connected to my family and ancestors in Sri Lanka. However, when I entered high school, the only dance class available was a combination of traditional American dances: jazz, ballet and tap. I enrolled in this class, where I was the only Sri Lankan. Over the school year, I began to realize that all types of dance are a form of expression that tell stories and communicate feelings.

It’s made me want to compete even more and, I want to win! As s dancer you never know what opportunities you’ll act so you have to be very versatile. You never know who’s watching you. I do almost every style of dance. Ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, musical theater, and a little bit of acro.
Story of an Hour Analysis “Story of an Hour,” is a story of a woman named Louise Mallard. Her heart condition makes sudden shocks and news life-threatening. Her husband Brently was in the list of killed in a train accident and Louise’s sister, Josephine comes to tell her in a very gentle way, because of her condition. The mention of Louise’s heart failure sneaks in very subtle foreshadowing that will lead to her death at the end of the story. More foreshadowing comes afterward when it mentions that they did not take a second telegram to prove Mr. Mallard's death.
In my personal analysis, while she shows the emotionally damaging aspect of competitive dancing, she struggles to capture the audience emotionally. An opposing individual of this audience may be able to emotionally connect with the audience to convey a different opinion. Others with different backgrounds such as being an experienced dance parent may be swayed against this article because of personal experience and emotional disconnection. The audience may expect a more emotional view, through true experiences rather than scientific
To dance is to be knowledgeable about the stories of the ancestral heroes. Dancing, unlike painting and singing, is learnt at an early age. This allows large groups of people to demonstrate their clan rights in front of an audience. Dance is also seen as an occasion to entertain and to be entertained and through the work of dance to show their love for families and kin. It is for this reason that dance may be performed at the end of every day in some communities.
The confusion stems from a fear of the unknown or a hidden unwillingness. As a dancer there is a predisposition to look, behave, and internalize criticism in an abusive way. This skewed mentality is a fleeting connection to tradition that immobilizes the desire to look beyond the generational mindset. It was not until I had met a mentor that emphasized anatomical correctness and individual contentment that I was inspired to change my view on dance. When change and inspiration are intertwined, progress is expedited and personal growth materializes.
When I first got on the stage as a team to perform, I got in my pose and waited. As soon as the melody played I was lost in the music and the moves just came by themselves. When I heard the lyrics of the music I felt some sort of happiness, a feeling that’s hard to explain. No words can explain how I felt about dance. I felt free and had no problem with performing a beautiful dance piece for a crowd.
The word “ballet” brings to mind words such as “grace” or “beauty” when heard by many people. The definition itself states that it is a form of dance that uses precise steps and light, graceful motions. This definition was in the minds of those who attended the Théâtre des Champs-Élysèes in May 1913, but rather they were greeted with the complete opposite. When Igor Stravinsky’s ballet Rite of Spring opened, the audience was greeted with swift, chaotic music that quickly became a whirlwind of sound. The music softened and the curtains opened to a primitive dance, causing mass hysteria throughout the theatre.

I have always had a burning passion for dance since I was a young girl. My first time on a stage, I was immediately hooked.
